
Demonstrate Knowledge of Engineering Metals, Properties and Standards
1. What This Unit Is About
This unit standard is written for people who want to work as Welders and Boilermakers in the metal fabrication trade. It sits inside the Metal Fabrication and Welding qualification and gives you the background knowledge you need before you start cutting, shaping, and joining metal in the workshop. Knowing your metals what they are made of, how they behave, and how they are classified and specified is what separates a trained tradesperson from someone who is simply copying what they see. A welder who understands why a metal cracks, corrodes, or distorts can prevent problems before they happen, instead of only reacting to them afterwards.
By the end of this unit, you must be able to:
●Identify engineering metals and explain their characteristics, applications, and common tests.
● Demonstrate knowledge of steel sections and standards.
These two outcomes are covered by two “elements” in this unit: Element 1 deals with metals themselves what they are, how we describe them, and how we test and treat them. Element 2 deals with the standard steel shapes and reference systems you will use every time you read a workshop drawing or place a material order.
Before starting this unit, you should already know Unit 228 (Apply safety rules and regulations) and Unit 229 (Plan and organise metal fabrication). This is because the tests, heat-treatment processes and cutting/marking-out work described here involve heat, sharp tools, hot metal and workshop machinery you must already be able to work safely and to plan your job before you attempt any of the practical activities linked to this unit.
Why this matters on the job: every structural drawing you are given as a welder or boilermaker will specify a material (for example “mild steel RSA 50x50x6”) and, often, a heat treatment or test requirement (for example “stress relieve after welding” or “100% dye penetrant test on all welds”). If you do not understand the vocabulary and reasoning in this unit, you will not be able to follow those instructions correctly, and mistakes at this stage are expensive to fix once a structure has already been welded together.
