Welcome to plumbing and pipe-fitting! It is excellent to have you leading this course.

As a vocational education and training (VET) trainer for plumbing and pipe fitting level 1, my role is foundational. I am responsible for introducing trainees to the essential safety practices, hand tools, and basic mechanical principles of the trade, ensuring they build the competence and confidence required to progress in the industry.

Below is a brief explanation of the focus areas for each of the specific unit standards you mentioned for Level 1:

Unit Standard Breakdowns (Level 1)

  • Unit ID 434: Apply Safety and Health Procedures in the Workplace Introduces trainees to basic Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations, identifying workshop hazards, wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and responding to emergencies or accidents in a plumbing environment.

  • Unit ID 435: Use and Maintain Hand Tools Focuses on the correct selection, safe operation, and routine maintenance of standard plumbing hand tools (such as pipe wrenches, hacksaws, pliers, and files) to ensure longevity and precise workmanship.

  • Unit ID 436: Use and Maintain Power Tools and Equipment Covers the safe operation, inspection, and care of basic power tools used in plumbing (such as portable drills and grinders), emphasizing electrical safety and proper handling techniques.

  • Unit ID 439: Read and Interpret Basic Plumbing Drawings and Specifications Teaches trainees how to understand simple structural blueprints, schematic symbols, and basic plumbing line drawings so they can identify where pipes and fixtures need to be installed.

  • Unit ID 440: Perform Basic Calculations Related to Plumbing Trades Focuses on essential trade mathematics, including measuring lengths, calculating areas and volumes, estimating material quantities, and understanding simple ratios for pipe runs.

  • Unit ID 444: Cut, Thread, and Join Pipes A core practical module where trainees learn to measure, cut, thread, and connect various types of piping materials (such as galvanized iron, copper, or PVC) using standard industry joining methods.

  • Unit ID 445: Install and Maintain Basic Plumbing Fixtures Covers the fundamental steps for positioning, mounting, and connecting basic sanitary fixtures like washbasins, sinks, and toilets, ensuring leak-free connections.

  • Unit ID 456: Perform Basic Arc and Gas Welding Operations Provides an introduction to simple thermal joining techniques. Trainees learn the safety protocols and basic techniques for joining metals, which is highly useful for brackets and pipe supports.

  • Unit ID 467: Perform Basic Bricklaying and Plastering for Plumbing Installations This unit equips trainees with basic masonry skills, enabling them to neatly patch walls, build small inspection manholes, and pour concrete over pipes after underground or in-wall installations.
