Purpose
Farming is a business. Like any other business such as manufacturing or retailing, to farm
successfully requires solid business acumen.
The first aspect of good business acumen is to plan. Planning can take many forms: planning
the layout of a farm, planning the planting or harvesting process or planning how the
produce will be transported to the various markets. The most important aspect of planning
though is proper financial planning. In the final instance the intention is to optimise profits.
Planned profits cannot be calculated if you do not have an accurate understanding of costs
(inputs, labour, capital needs) and being clear as to what produce can sell for (what income
can be generated, which markets pay better, how big is the demand).
The purpose of this module is to assist you to understand and be able to plan your enterprise
so that it will be profitable, and your business can sustain itself and grow.
