Welding is a process used to join two or more pieces of metal by melting them together, often with heat, pressure, or both. A filler material may also be added to strengthen the joint. Common methods include arc welding, gas welding, and MIG/TIG welding.

This course recognises people who have the competencies required forĀ
Metal Fabrication (Welding). It is awarded to people who gouge metals using manual arc equipment as part of metal fabrication operations; weld aluminum using the tungsten inert gas welding process in the down hand position; weld thermoplastics with electrofusion equipment; weld mild steel using the tungsten inert gas welding process in all positions; perform advanced manual arc welding on aluminium in all positions; perform advanced tungsten inert gas welding on aluminium in all positions; perform advanced manual arc welding on stainless steel in all positions; perform advanced tungsten inert gas welding on stainless steel in all positions; hard face surfaces as part of metal fabrication operations; weld stainless steel pipe in all positions using the tungsten gas arc welding process.

This unit standard is intended for those who apply workplace communication processes in a metal fabrication work place. People credited with this unit standards are able to gather, convey and receive information; carry out routine face-to-face communication; apply visual communication; participate in simple workplace meetings; complete relevant work related documents; locate specific information in written material.

This unit standard is intended for those who carry out basic rigging and safe lifting practices as part of metal fabrication operations. People credited with this unit standards are able to plan and prepare for load slinging as well as to sling load.

This unit standard is intended for those who estimate production costs. People credited with this unit standards are able to analyse project documentation with reference to quantities; calculate quantities of material; estimate the required human and equipment resources; prepare a work plan

This unit standard is intended for those who weld mild steel in the metal inert gas welding process in all positions. People credited with this unit standards are able to prepare materials and equipment; weld mild steel in all positions; conduct post weld inspection.

This unit standard is intended for those who weld stainless steel using the tungsten inert gas welding process in the down hand position. People credited with this unit standards are able to prepare materials and equipment; weld stainless steel in the down hand position; conduct post weld inspection.
