Welcome to farm machinery and infrastructure level 2 

1. Purpose 

Purpose of the Curriculum

This certificate and its curriculum have been developed in the context of National Development Plan 4 (NDP4) that covers the period of 2012 to 2017 as a component of Namibia’s Vision 2030. Its aims include:

targeting skills development in four key areas of which one is agriculture

supporting national agricultural development such that agriculture experiences real average growth of 4% over the period

This curriculum will contribute directly to the skills required for employment and self-employment in agriculture and which are essential to the creation of the national capacity needed to achieve the desired economic growth rate.

this qualification recognises people who have the competencies required for performing farm machinery and infrastructure tasks. It is awarded to people who have demonstrated the skills and knowledge required to work effectively in the agriculture industry to use, repair and maintain hand, power farm tools, farm vehicles, simple farm machinery, water infrastructure, pumps on the farm, farm fences, crush pens and kraals, farm roads, farm buildings, provide water for farming operations, construct fences, crush pens and kraals, conduct basic arc welding and repair of metal structures and blacksmithing techniques, maintain housing for livestock, demonstrate understanding of basic environmental principles in agriculture, demonstrate introductory knowledge of soil, water, nutrient and plant interactions and soil and water conservation in agriculture and appropriate relevant technology, and apply basic first aid, HIV and AIDS, numeracy, computer, financial literacy, entrepreneurship and English skills while interacting with others in an agricultural workplace environment. It also requires electives with a minimum total of 19 credits. The electives, will enhance diversity of skills acquisition in addition to the core competencies addressed by the compulsory unit standard

Nominal duration

1200 hours

Recommendation for ratio of practical to theoretical teaching

Overall: 70 practical/30 theoretical

The range extends from (one primarily practical major outcome with) a ratio of 90/10 to 10/90 (for a few major outcomes that are theory only)

Entry requirements/ Pre-requisite qualifications

Grade 10 school leaving certificate

2. Regulation of qualification 

This qualification will be awarded to people who are credited with a minimum of 120 credits and have met the requirements of both the compulsory and elective sections
